Ellen & Josephine — Copenhagen City Hall Wedding

Ellen and Josephine got ready in their Copenhagen apartment together — unhurried, just the two of them and whoever was closest.

The ceremony at Copenhagen City Hall was small by design. A handful of people, a room they'd chosen, and ten minutes that changed everything.

They didn't wear traditional wedding outfits. Josephine had a violet jacket set on. Ellen's white dress fit the city hall mood completely. It reflected them in a way that formal bridal wear wouldn't have. After the ceremony, people stood on both sides outside the city hall with bubbles and rice, welcoming them as they walked through. Family and friends, a small group, making the moment feel bigger than it was.

We walked to Ørstedsparken after. The guests had laid out tables, chairs, picnic blankets on the grass. Josephine's mom had baked a marzipan cake, which they cut outside while someone opened champagne. I borrowed them for thirty minutes to take portraits — just the two of them, laughing, walking, having a private moment together after being the center of attention all afternoon.

The light that day had that particular Copenhagen quality in August — soft, a little diffuse, the kind that makes everything look exactly like itself. We walked and gave them space to actually feel what had just happened. No timeline pulling us forward. No one checking the schedule. Four hours that moved at their speed.

This is what an intimate same-sex wedding in Copenhagen actually looks like. Two people who chose each other, and a day built entirely around that. LGBTQ+ weddings at Copenhagen City Hall happen every week — this one was theirs, and it looked like no one else's.
