Gina & Yumo — A Chinese-European City Hall Wedding in Copenhagen

Gina grew up in Copenhagen. Yumo moved from Chongqing to study in Denmark. They found each other somewhere in between.

Their city hall wedding was small by design — close family, close friends, a ceremony that lasted twenty minutes and felt like longer in the best way.

After the signing, we walked. Christiansborg Palace, the Royal Library Garden, the waterfront at Slotsholmen. August in Copenhagen does something specific with light that I don't think I'll ever get tired of photographing — soft, long, and kind to veils.

Gina wore a veil. It did things in the wind that I couldn't have asked her to repeat. The weather gave us everything: perfect afternoon light, the usual Copenhagen breeze that makes veils move like they're part of the ceremony itself. That veil became the visual anchor of the day — flying, catching sun, framing her face in ways I just followed and captured.

Danish guests, Chinese family, English speakers filling the gaps — everyone had a great time despite the language differences. At the reception, people signed their names on the champagne bottle. Not a guestbook. A bottle they'll open years from now with everyone's handwriting still there.

This is the kind of wedding I think about when I think about why I photograph cross-cultural couples in this city. Two families who don't share a language sharing an afternoon together in Denmark's capital. Three hours with me. One ceremony, one walk through Slotsholmen, one August day that looked exactly like them.
