Copenhagen City Hall Wedding Photo Routes With Maps: 1 vs 2 Hours

bride walking in copenhagen holding her high heels after getting married in denmark.jpg

Last month, a couple hired me for their one-year anniversary photoshoot in Copenhagen.

Not a renewal ceremony. Not a vow reaffirmation. Just photos.

They got married at Københavns Rådhus last year. No photographer. They figured the ceremony was ten minutes — how many photos could they need? They'd take some themselves.

"We have exactly three photos from our wedding day," the bride told me. "One from inside City Hall that my friend took. Two from Nyhavn that a stranger took. That's it. We don't even remember leaving the building."

So they came back. Hired me. Recreated the day they wish they'd had. (Though no more ceremony ;P)

Here's what I learned: most couples booking a City Hall wedding in Copenhagen don't realize the ceremony is the shortest part of the day. Ten minutes to get married. Then what? You're standing outside Rådhus with a certificate, probably no plan, and maybe two hours before your dinner reservation.

That's when I started mapping out these routes. Not just "go to Nyhavn" — actual walking paths with timing, backup plans, and the exact sequence that makes sense when you're in a wedding dress with 90 minutes to spare.

Because the biggest mistake isn't skipping the photographer. It's showing up with no plan for what happens after the ten-minute ceremony.

This post breaks down what your day looks like at each package length. Not just locations, but what actually happens: how much time we spend at City Hall, how far we walk, what you have time for, what gets rushed, what gets skipped.

Table Of Content

Before we talk routes, here's the base timeline everyone follows, regardless of package:

Before ceremony (15 minutes):
Arrive, getting to know the location, maybe fix your hair in the Rådhus bathroom.

Ceremony (10 minutes):
Exchange rings, sign papers, receive your marriage certificate.

After ceremony:

  • Group photos if family is there: add 15 minutes

  • Exit moment (confetti, champagne spray): 10-15 minutes

  • City Hall interior portraits (staircase, courtyard, corridors): 20-30min

That's 40-55 minutes before you even leave the building.

So when you book "1 hour" or "2 hours," you're really deciding what to do after your Copenhagen City Hall ceremony. Here's the breakdown. ↓

Package Time After City Hall Locations What You Get Best For
1 Hour 10-15 minutes 1 location City Hall ceremony + interiors + one nearby backdrop (Magstræde, Ørstedsparken, or Gammel Strand) Just the two of you, quick documentation, tight timeline
2 Hours 60 minutes 3-4 locations City Hall + variety route (Nyhavn, palaces, gardens, canals) + celebration moments + time to breathe Most couples — variety + celebration without rushing
4+ Hours 2+ hours 5+ locations + activities Full wedding experience: getting ready, ceremony, multiple routes, guest activities, restaurant/celebration coverage Bringing guests, want full-day documentation, Copenhagen experience beyond ceremony

This package works if:

  • It's just the two of you (no guests to coordinate)

  • You want only ceremony coverage, not a celebration

  • You have dinner plans or another commitment right after

  • You value efficiency over variety

What you actually get time for:

  • City Hall ceremony + interiors: 40 minutes

  • One nearby location: 10-15 minutes

That's it. Ceremony coverage plus one nearby Copenhagen street. Then we're done.

Here are your route options:

Route 1: The City Hall Classic (Rådhus → Magstræde)

Where we go:

  • City Hall ceremony + interior portraits

  • Magstræde cobblestone street (5-minute walk from Rådhus)

Route 1: The City Hall Classic

What you get:
Formal City Hall interiors (chandelier halls, grand staircase, courtyard), then one charming Copenhagen street moment on Magstræde's pastel-painted cobblestones between 17th-century buildings. Architecture + old-town Copenhagen character in 60 minutes.

What you skip:
Water views, iconic tourist landmarks (Nyhavn's colorful houses), hidden gardens, any celebration moments with guests. This is documentation only — ceremony plus one classic backdrop.

Best for:
Couples who want "we got married in Copenhagen" photos without needing the postcard-famous locations. You're here for the charm, not the crowds.

We shoot Magstræde in 10 minutes — a few poses on the cobblestones, then we're done. There won’t be time for slow walking shots or a café champagne moment.

Route 2: The Garden Escape (Rådhus → Ørstedsparken or Café)

Where we go:

  • City Hall ceremony + interior portraits

  • Ørstedsparken (8-minute walk) OR a nearby café/hotel bar

  • One of my favourite hotel nearby is Hotel Bella Grande. Full of designer details, great vibe and delicious drinks!

What you get:
City Hall formality followed by one relaxed, intimate moment. Either Ørstedsparken's tree-lined paths and lake bridge (nature in the middle of the city), or a cozy café/hotel lobby with natural light for champagne portraits. Formal + candid contrast.

What you skip:
Copenhagen's architectural landmarks, waterfront views, anything touristy. You won't get Nyhavn, palaces, or canals. This route prioritizes quiet intimacy over iconic backdrops.

Best for:
Couples who hate tourist spots and want something that feels private. If you'd rather have one meaningful moment than a checklist of famous locations, this is your route.

If the weather turns, the café or hotel lobby option is your backup. Same intimate vibe, just indoors.

Route 3: The Gammel Strand Canal Walk (Rådhus → Gammel Strand Waterfront)

What you get:
City Hall interiors plus Copenhagen's waterfront charm along Gammel Strand. You'll stand on the canal edge with colorful buildings across the water, boats passing by, and the Marble Bridge in view. Architecture + water + that "Copenhagen canal" feeling — without the Nyhavn crowds.

What you skip:
The colorful Nyhavn houses everyone recognizes, cobblestone charm, hidden gardens, variety. This is City Hall + one water backdrop, then you're done.

Best for:
Couples who want water in their photos but don't have time to reach Nyhavn. You get the canal aesthetic in 15 minutes walking from City Hall.

We shoot along the canal edge, maybe catch the bridge if the light works. Ten minutes here, then we're done.

One hour is tight.

If your ceremony runs five minutes late or family photos take longer than planned,

we're cutting into location time. This is a coverage.

BUT

You always have the option to upgrade. ↓

This package works if:

  • You want variety in your photos

  • You're bringing guests and want celebration moments captured

  • You want iconic Copenhagen landmarks (Nyhavn, palaces, canals)

  • You want time to breathe, not rush

What you actually get time for:

  • City Hall ceremony + interiors: 40 minutes

  • Travel + 2-3 locations: 50 minutes

  • Celebration moments (champagne, exit, candid guest interactions): 30 minutes

You get a wedding day celebration story. Not just a ceremony coverage.

Here are your route options:

Route 1: The Waterfront Royal (Rådhus → Marble Bridge → Christiansborg Palace → Royal Library Garden → Gammel Strand)

Where we go:

  • City Hall ceremony + interior portraits

  • Marble Bridge + Christiansborg Palace courtyard (10-minute walk)

  • Royal Library Garden (5-minute walk, quiet and hidden)

  • Gammel Strand canal views or a café champagne stop

What you get:
City Hall's grand interiors, then a walking route through Copenhagen's most elegant architecture: Marble Bridge's white stone archway crossing Frederiksholm Canal, Christiansborg Palace's dramatic pillars and royal courtyard, Royal Library Garden's ivy-covered walls and quiet fountain (the hidden spot tourists never find), and Gammel Strand's canal views.

Four completely different location styles — formal, dramatic, romantic, waterfront — in one smooth 2-hour flow. Plus time for champagne, guest celebration moments, and candid shots between locations.

What you skip:
Only Nyhavn's colorful houses (the postcard shot everyone recognizes). You get variety and charm without fighting tourist crowds.

Best for:
Couples who want Copenhagen wedding photography that shows range — architectural drama, hidden romance, waterfront beauty — without the Nyhavn chaos. This route hits multiple best wedding photo locations in Copenhagen without backtracking.

The Royal Library Garden is not so crowded even on Saturdays. It's the hidden gem everyone loves once they see it in their photos.

Route 2: The Nyhavn Signature (Rådhus → Nyhavn → Frederiks Church → Amalienborg Palace)

Where we go:

  • City Hall ceremony + interior portraits

  • Metro to Nyhavn (or 15-minute walk if you prefer the journey)

  • Nyhavn colorful houses (the shot everyone recognizes)

  • Frederiks Church (Marble Church) steps

  • Amalienborg Palace courtyard (royal guards if timing works)

What you get:
City Hall interiors, then Copenhagen's most iconic landmarks: Nyhavn wedding photos with the colorful 17th-century townhouses lining the canal (the shot everyone wants), Frederiks Church wedding photography on the grand Marble Church steps with the dramatic dome behind you, and Amalienborg Palace courtyard with cobblestones and royal guards (if timing works).

This is the "everyone will recognize where we got married" route. Postcard-perfect Copenhagen + royal backdrops + time for guest moments and celebration.

What you skip:
Hidden local spots, off-the-beaten-path charm. This route is all about the famous views — which means you'll share Nyhavn with tourists (unless we shoot at 7am).

Best for:
Couples who want the iconic Copenhagen wedding locations everyone recognizes. If Nyhavn is non-negotiable and you want that classic "we got married in Copenhagen" album, this is your route.

We take the metro at 8am if you want Nyhavn empty. Otherwise, accept you're sharing the canal with tourists. (It doesn't ruin the photos — just changes the vibe.)

Route 3: The Local Adventure (Rådhus → Water Bus → Reffen Street Food Market)

What you get:
City Hall coverage, then we take the water bus 20 minutes to Reffen — Copenhagen's street food market on the industrial waterfront. Shipping containers converted to food stalls, harbor views, relaxed outdoor tables, and backdrops no other couples have.

Modern Copenhagen instead of old-town charm. Plus time for casual celebration with guests over street food and beer. This route feels like a Copenhagen experience, not just a photo location.

What you skip:
Traditional landmarks, palaces, canals, anything "wedding-pretty" in the classic sense. You won't get Nyhavn, Royal Library Garden, or cobblestone streets. This is for couples who want their day to feel different.

Best for:
Couples who hate crowds and want something completely off the typical Copenhagen wedding photography route. If you'd rather have fish tacos at a waterfront market than champagne at a palace, this is it.

Copenhagen city hall map 2 hour route 3.png

The difference isn't just "more stops." It's:

  • Exit moments — Time for confetti, champagne spray, walking out together (not rushing to the next spot)

  • Guest involvement — If friends or family came, we capture them celebrating you

  • Wardrobe flexibility — Time to add a jacket, fix makeup, swap shoes between locations

  • Weather backup — If it rains, we wait 10 minutes or pivot to covered spots without killing the schedule

  • Candid moments — The best photos happen between poses when you're walking, laughing, noticing the city

One hour is a photoshoot. Two hours is a wedding day.

If you're bringing guests and want to turn your City Hall signing into a full Copenhagen experience, four hours opens up activities:

  • Canal boat tour with your group

  • Tivoli Gardens entry

  • King's Garden picnic

  • Lunch at a Copenhagen restaurant

  • Multiple outfit changes

  • Coverage from getting ready

At this point, we're not documenting a ceremony. We're designing a Copenhagen wedding experience.

Ask yourself:

Who's coming?
Just you two → 1 hour might work. Guests joining → book 2 hours minimum.

What do you want photos of?
Just "we got married" → 1 hour. Celebration + variety → 2 hours.

What's your pace?
Efficient and done → 1 hour. Relaxed and present → 2 hours.

Still unsure?
Default to 2 hours. I've never had a couple say "we had too much time." I've had many say "we wish we'd booked longer."

When you book, I'll confirm your route based on what matters to you. Then you just show up and get married.

Q: How long does the Copenhagen City Hall ceremony take?
A: 10 minutes for the ceremony itself, plus 15 minutes for group photos and 15-20 minutes for interior portraits. Plan for 50 minutes total before leaving the building.

Q: Is 1 hour enough for Copenhagen City Hall wedding photos?
A: 1 hour works if it's just the two of you, you want ceremony coverage only, and have plans right after. You'll get City Hall interiors + one nearby location (like Magstræde or Gammel Strand).

Q: What can you do after a Copenhagen City Hall wedding?
A: Most couples choose between: Nyhavn for iconic photos, Royal Library Garden for quiet charm, canal-side champagne at Gammel Strand, or a café celebration nearby. Two hours of photography gives you time for 3-4 of these.

Q: How long should I book my Copenhagen wedding photographer for?
A: 2 hours is the sweet spot. It gives you City Hall coverage + 3-4 photo locations + time for celebration moments without rushing. Four hours works if you're bringing guests and want a full wedding experience.

Q: Can we change our route on the day?
A: Absolutely. Weather, timing, or energy levels might shift your plan. I always have backup routes ready. We confirm the route when you book, but we stay flexible on the day itself.

Q: What happens if it rains on our Copenhagen City Hall wedding day?
A: We have indoor backup plans for every route. City Hall itself has beautiful interior spots (staircases, halls, courtyard under glass). Nearby options: covered arcades at Christiansborg Palace, café with big windows, hotel lobbies, covered market halls. Rain doesn't ruin the photos — it potentially could add more story of the day! Plus I have a transparent umbrella that makes the rainy day even more romantic!

Seasonal note: Tivoli Gardens is only open April-September and mid-November through December. Royal Library Garden is gorgeous year-round but especially in late spring (May-June) when flowers bloom.
